12 best sites to download software in 2020 including latest and older versions

So you have a brand new PC or Laptop and want to install your favourite software or you are like me and want to see what cool free software downloads are available. Maybe you are looking for older versions of softwares as new ones are not compatible or are not working.

Weblife blog presents to you the 11 best software download sites that are available on the internet, most of them have minimal or no ads and you can go in and download your software quickly.

Criteria

  • The website should have minimal or non intrusive ads
  • No wrapping of downloads in other software

The List

1. MAJOR GEEKS

Launched in 2001 it is one of the oldest and my favourite websites in the list. The main attraction for this is that it has a really clean interface and with no intrusive ads or pop ups. You are greeted with a homepage with all the latest versions of software that has been released over this week.

You can find software under different categories or the top download section which I recommend where you can find popular utilities you might need. They have a strict policy of reviewing all software so rest assured all software are safe.

2. SOFTPEDIA

A big brand that provided a large collection of software downloads for Windows, Linux and Android. They also have a good news section which covers the latest news on the platform of your choice.

3. FOSSHUB

Fan of open source? FOSSHUB is your one place to download all free and open source software for your daily needs. With the quality of most open source software matching their proprietary counterparts, check here first before moving on to other freeware options.

4. Filehorse

Filehorse has a simple layout, loads fast and has no ads, what's more to like. Don't know what their revenue model is but they have a good collection of applications though it is only for Windows.

5. DOWNLOAD CREW

Part of betanews blog which regularly updates on latest software news, they have a really pleasing interface and provide a collection of free and paid softwares. They usually review all the software published which can add to the peace of mind of their users.

6. Uptodown

A software website that has been there for a really long time and has been revamped to focus on Android software. But still they have a good collection of desktop software and are useful especially if you want to find an older version of your favourite software.

7. Download.com

One of the biggest names in the business and run by CNET and the reason I have not put it higher is because I had bad experiences with them like packaging software in their own download manager. Also they try to push shareware software higher on the site.

The website as of 2020 has been revamped and the interface is much cleaner now.

8. Filepuma

Filepuma has a simple interface with a decent collection of software for Windows. I really like their homepage where you can see all the main categories and popular software under it. Recommended.

9. Downloadastro

Downloadastro also has a simple interface and has a good selection of windows software.

10. Afterdawn

Afterdawn has an outdated interface but the main advantage is that they host older versions of software. Try this website if you are looking for an alternate version of your favourite software.

11. PortableApps

PortableApps is a great website which provides a portable version of your favourite software that you can carry with you on your pen drive and use it on a PC without installing. This may be useful if you don’t have enough privilege to install on machines like PC at work.

12. FILEHIPPO

Filehippo was one of my favourite websites which had a curated list of all the software you need. But since then they have evolved to becoming one with intrusive ads and their design has become less usable. One useful feature they still have is to find older versions of software.

Conclusion

Which websites do you like? Do you have a favourite which is not part of the list, do share it in the comments.
